Bienvenido a Alcalá de Henares

Today was our first real day in Spain. It was also the first day of classes! This morning, McKenzie and I woke up at around 7:00 ready to go. We had our alarms set for 7:30, but turns out jet lagged brains didn't really need them. We both showered? bathed? cleaned ourselves? in our cute little handheld bathtub shower thing. The ceiling is so low that you have to sit down, but the water pressure is awesome and the water's nice and hot. We ate breakfast with Gloria this morning - yogurt and bread with honey. Then it was off to class! I'm in Spanish 339 and Spanish 425. Introduction to Spanish Literature and Iberian Civilizations. Our professors are Carlos y Rebeca. Class is conducted in Spanish, and they never speak English. It's pretty awesome. I'm really glad I understand everything that's going on haha. In between 339 and 425, some of the other students have 441 in place of 339. So in the hour between my two classes, I and a bunch of the other students in there with me went to find some churros con chocolate. Estaban bien ricas. They were sooo dang good. The chocolate was pretty thick, and the churros tasted like beignets but without the powdered sugar. The chocolate more than made up for it though. It was sweet.

After classes, McKenzie and I came home, ate lunch with our family (ensalada de tomates - tomatoes with oil and salt - lentajes - beans, but little tiny ones with sausage - patatas fritas - fried potatoes - (but not French fries) - and pears&apples. and then took a little siesta. When in Spain, right? Haha
This is Raymundo. He missed the photo haha. He's skinning us a pear in this photo.

After our siesta, a big group of us got together to do the Alcabusqueda activity. Basically a scavenger hunt through Alcalá to familiarize ourselves with the city. It was fun! We found some kids and asked them if they knew where things were, and it was impressive how much they knew about the city and its history. I definitely don't know half as much about anywhere I've lived as they do about Alcalá. We ended out the day chilling with Profe in his house. He lives right on the Plaza de Cervantes, which is the main square in Alcalá. It's a sweet location - think an apartment right over downtown Manhattan looking out into Times Square from above. Bien guay. ( Pronounced: guh-wy) Very cool.
